Magnificent donation from Gunilla Bergström to The Nordic Watercolour Museum

One of Sweden’s foremost picture book creators, Gunilla Bergström, has donated a major number of her original books about Alfie Atkins to The Nordic Watercolour Museum. Only a few of the books remain in the family’s possession but will be deposited to the museum. The donation encompasses 17 original books that thus become part of the museum’s art collection. This was a gift from Gunilla Bergström while she was still alive.

Bera Nordal, Museum Director at The Nordic Watercolour Museum, is both moved and grateful for the confidence Gunilla Bergström showed with the donation. The two collaborated closely during the exhibition I’ll Darn Well Draw the Soul (2018), which focused on Gunilla Bergström’s images and clearly showed their amazing storytelling power.

– Our aim was to show her greatness as an artist. It was very important to Gunilla that her visual language got the attention it deserved. This donation is the largest in the museum’s history. Gunilla Bergström’s generosity towards the museum touches us deeply and it is with great humility that we take on this responsibility, says Bera Nordal.

Gunilla Bergström passed away on the 23rd of August 2021.
