Anna Pettersson, Artistic Director of Strindbergs Intima Teater, directs In War and Love, a new classic commissioned by the Regional Theatre. Anna has created her own adaptation of Aristophanes' comedy Lysistrata, incorporating elements from Euripides' tragedy The Trojan Women.
Lysistrata tells the story of the women of Athens, who go on a sex and love strike to bring an end to the war between Athens and the rest of the Hellenic world. But as we are living in a time of ongoing wars and conflicts, Anna did not want to settle for a comedy about war alone. Instead, she balances its humour with the tragic perspective of The Trojan Women.
The play is set in Troy after the Greeks have won the war and the spoils are about to be divided. It is a powerful portrayal of the nature of war, and above all of how it affects women. The performance will also include choral singing.
