Gansey Fisherman's Sweaters
This event has passed

info
A Fisherman's Gansey is a knitted functional garment with a rich history.
Anna Josefsson has delved into the culture of fisherman's sweaters in the North Sea region and has documented how they were knitted and worn. In this lecture, she talks about the traditions, patterns, garment construction, and knitting techniques.
Fisherman sweaters from different locations around the North Sea share similarities as well as distinct differences. Each garment tells its own story – with variations in symbols, colour, patterns, and yarn. Ganseys were traditionally worn by fishermen and sailors around the British Isles and the English Channel. Historical ganseys are often named after the places where they were documented, and different regions of Britain developed their own styles and patterns.
Anna Josefsson grew up in Skärhamn, a coastal town with a deep connection to the sea and the livelihoods it provides. With the sea close at hand, she is passionate about sustainability and ecology. She works with textiles and teaches various techniques, but is also a seaweed diver, fisher, and biology educator.
