info
Kristoffer Arvidsson looks at the history of watercolour, from the first paintings in Egypt and China, via the illuminated manuscripts of the Middle Ages, to the emergence of watercolour as its own art form in 18th century Britain. We follow the transformation of watercolour through the experimental approach in Modernism, through the free mixing of styles and techniques in Postmodernism, culminating in the great significance of amateur culture online.
How did the art of watercolour arise? Why is the medium so popular on such a broad front today?
Kristoffer Arvidsson, PhD in Art History and Visual Studies, is Head of Research at Gothenburg Museum of Art and editor of the publication series Skiascope. He is also a curator, art critic and course leader.
