Dr. LakraBlack Hole

Since his time as a tattoo artist, Dr Lakra has expanded his repertoire to include wall murals and works on paper. His art is characterized by a special mixture of traditional tattoo iconography, symbolism, and references to both popular and fine art. In his works, he uses vintage magazines, movie posters, postcards, pinups, pornographic magazines, and horror films as inspiration, together with imagery of demons, skeletons, and other macabre tattoo iconography.
In the exhibition Black Hole, Dr Lakra has transformed the museum’s biggest gallery into a spectacular installation of wall drawings, depicting a world where ancient myths and modern conflicts are reflected in each other. The boundary between then and now, between fantasy and reality, becomes blurred. The picture flux is about the struggle between good and evil, between the female and the male. Demons are raging, confusion prevails, and battles are fought, while the human longing for love, peace, and harmony can never be appeased. We are on a journey into a perilous cosmos where life itself is at stake.

About
Dr Lakra
Dr Lakra is the taken name of Jerónimo López Ramirez, an internationally renowned artist from Oaxaca in Mexico, who began his career as a tattoo artist. The nickname "doctor" initially evoked from the bag in which he once carried his tattoo equipment, while "lakra" in Spanish translates as "scarred from sickness", but is often used in Mexican slang to signify a "delinquent".
