The Art of Becoming AlfieSketches for the Books about Alfie Atkins
This exhibition features selected sketches and originals for the printed books about the now world-famous Alfie Atkins, or Alfons Åberg, which is his Swedish name.
Gunilla Bergström (1942–2021) explored collage as a narrative element in her works, long before illustrators started using digital technology. She built her pictures by combining pieces of fabric, wallpaper, ribbons and other materials with sections that she drew. In 2021, while she was still alive, Bergström donated her sketches and original images behind the Alfie Atkins books to The Nordic Watercolour Museum. Since then, they have been part of the museum collection, and a selection of the artist's sketches is now on display in the exhibition.
