Long live The Nordic Watercolour Museum – we’re celebrating 25 years!
It has been two and a half decades, and together we have built a unique place where art, nature, and community come together. In 2025, we celebrate our journey – and look ahead to the future.
2025 marks the year when The Nordic Watercolour Museum can look back on 25 years as a meeting place for art, culture, and creativity. Since its inauguration in the year 2000, the museum in Skärhamn has become an international centre for watercolour art, welcoming visitors from every continent. Our exhibitions have explored a wide range of themes and expressions, always using the versatility of watercolour as a starting point. Through our work with artist residencies, educational programmes, and collaborations with schools as well as local organisations, the museum has become an integral part of both Tjörn and the international art scene.
Jubilee Lectures Autumn 2025
"The Museum and ..." – a series of online lectures
What is the role of an art museum beyond its own walls? At a time when discussions about fake news flourish, public trust in museums is at an all-time high. Does this trust bring a particular responsibility for museums to take on? As part of our 25th anniversary, we invite you to five digital lectures, each approaching the topic from a completely different perspective, where art meets neuroscience, education, and AI, among other fields.

In Celebration of the jubilee
As a part of the jubilee, we've redesigned the upper floor. Among other things, we've asked an artist to create a miniature model of one of the museum's guest studios and created an entirely new workshop space in the room we call Konstpausen. Here, visitors can explore watercolour pencils – a versatile and creative medium that truly deserves more attention. You'll also find books on technique to browse, perfect for sparking inspiration to help you get started. What makes this workshop extra special is that it's open during the museum's regular opening hours, meaning there's always space to let your creativity flow.
“How do you write a museum’s history from within?”
That is the question posed by curator and writer Joanna Persman in the short essay she has written to mark the museum’s 25th anniversary. Rather than counting exhibitions, programmes or works in the collection, she turns her gaze to what is seldom seen – the hours of preparation, the nails in the walls, and the furrowed brows of concentration.
“Museum maths is an extraordinary discipline.”
