Create like KOLLEKTIVET!
- Updated
This spring, you can create like a picture-book illustrator at The Nordic Watercolour Museum! Inspired by some of the artists in the exhibition Kollektivet / Picture Book Illustration from Finland, we offer creative opportunities available during the museum’s regular opening hours. On the upper floor, you can try your hand at comic-strip drawing on tiles, scratch art and transforming text into images using water-soluble watercolour pencils. Create your own images and stories when you visit!
About
Scrape like Lena Frölander-Ulf
Artist Lena Frölander-Ulf created the images for her book Me, Fidel and the Big City using black scratchboard. By scraping the board with a sharp point, you can reveal the coloures parts of an image. Take a seat in Thordénrummet and bring out the light within the dark!
Draw like Edith Hammar
Parts of the story in artist Edith Hammar’s graphic novel Portal take place in a tiled sauna. Take a seat upstairs and try drawing on the tiles on the table! The tiles become comic-strip panels that form a constantly changing collective narrative. Start your own strip or add to someone else’s.
Illustrate in Konstpausen
Here, you can use watercolour pencils to create like a picture-book illustrator. Take a piece of watercolour paper, read the sentence on it, and draw your image! Your illustration can be simple or have more details than the sentence. If you want to exhibit your picture, write your name on it and hang it on the wall. If you want to keep it, take it home with you.

KOLLEKTIVET / Picture Book Illustration from Finland
The Nordic Watercolour Museum begins a new year of exhibitions with a tribute to the picture book as an art form. We follow the magic that arises when images, words and imagination come together in the hands of ten of Finland’s most significant contemporary illustrators. The distinctive characteristic of picture books is their unique way of combining the universal and the topical. Each book is the result of artistic ingenuity and a desire to experiment. Come and explore the fascinating world of book art!
