Lecture: Contemporary art – What the heck is that?

info
Ever since The Nordic Watercolour Museum opened, our aim has been to look at the watercolour technique from the perspective of contemporary and modern art, against the background of the tradition of watercolour painting. The majority of our exhibitions are rooted in contemporary art and our collection puts the emphasis on artists who are active today.
But what does that mean? What’s it like to work with contemporary art and to look at the art being created today?
For this lecture, we’ve invited Stefie Goudaki to pose the following questions: Why is it difficult to understand contemporary art? How can anything be art? And why do we feel stupid when we don’t get what the art represents?
During the lecture, she explains contemporary art in a simple way that everyone can follow. We look at why the art world enjoys its exclusivity, why contemporary art wants us to interact with it, and how we got here from the beautiful Greek sculptures to an upside-down urinal.
Stefie Goudaki is an art historian and curator at the Art Museum in Skövde, Sweden.
