In 1950s Japan, sisters Satsuki and Mei move to the countryside with their father to be closer to their mother, who is recovering in a nearby hospital. Their new home is old and full of whispers, and the sisters soon realize they are not alone.
In the woods around the house, a world full of secrets awaits: black sootballs moving in the shadows, a whizzing cat bus with many legs – and most of all, the big, furry, and kind-hearted creature that Mei calls Totoro. Meeting Totoro opens the door to something bigger: a friendship as big as imagination, a safety in the middle of the unknown – and the beginning of one of the most beloved family adventures in film history.
