Pattern and texture are central to Eva Berge’s paintings. She studied at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts in the 1980s and in recent years, she has started to work with motifs that lean towards Christian and spiritual traditions. Her personal artistic challenge involves depicting content, thought and emotion with colour and form. Sunny rain ("Solregn") is a large, brilliant and luminous watercolour piece. Short brown lines form a rhythmic pattern across a warm yellow foundation. The lines follow each other, creating texture and columns. On one level, the imagery is abstract. The interplay of the paint and lines create our experience. At the same time, Eva Berge gives us shapes that inspire associations. It is easy to see the beaming sun, solid ground, raindrops and even the pattern of a rainbow among the lines.
