KG Nilson attended Valand School of Fine Art in Gothenburg, and The Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm. He was a professor of graphic arts at the Royal Institute of Art and taught colour theory at University College of Arts, Craft and Design, both in Stockholm. KG Nilson came into early contact with Josef Albers’ Interaction of Color. He translated this book and eventually produced his own book: Färglära (Colour Theory, 1982). Since the 1960s, KG Nilson has rigorously and playfully explored the effects of colour, social games and power relations. The motifs in his art are often developed from maps with roads and water pipes. From a heritage of concrete art, he transforms pictures of houses with hexagonal roofs into abstract compositions. Geometric figures form puzzle pieces in his imagery. The pure colours interact with each other and create distinctive silhouettes and skylines.
