Lena Mattsson is primarily a video and performance artist though she started her career with watercolour. There are numerous references in her work to art history and to the world of films. In her The End of the Beginning Lena Mattsson derives inspiration from the landscape of her childhood. Myths and folktales from the district of northern Bohuslän are interwoven, and in the red Bohus granite we can discern a woman slowly disappearing into the sea. By combining traditional watercolour technique with video she succeeds in crossing all conventional borderlines and erases the barriers separating painting from film. She plays with our concepts of reality and illusion. The viewer ends uncertain about what is indeed film and what is genuine watercolour. The result is a unique and powerful merging of two quite different media.

Lena Mattsson är i första hand video- och performancekonstnär. Hon började sin konstnärsbana med måleri. I hennes verk finns många referenser till konsthistorien och filmvärlden. I verket The End of The Beginning utgår Lena Mattsson från sitt hemlandskap. Sagor och myter från norra Bohuslän vävs samman, och i den röda bohusgraniten ser vi en kvinna sakta försvinna ut i havet. Genom att kombinera traditionell akvarellteknik med video överskrider hon inte bara alla vedertagna gränser, utan suddar också ut gränslinjerna mellan måleri och film. Hon leker med vår uppfattning om verklighet och illusion. Till slut är man inte ens säker på vad som är verklig film och vad som är genuint akvarellmåleri. Resultatet blir ett unikt och kraftfullt möte mellan två helt olika medier.
