The alchemists dreamed of turning ordinary matter into gold. Sólveig Aðalsteinsdóttir may work with the ordinary, but she is not interested in transforming it. Instead, she wants us to see it with new eyes. In the work Evaporated Watercolours in Glass, she lets two of watercolour’s base elements, colour pigment and water, create effects together. A large number of empty glass jars stand on a simple sheet of plywood. They are emptied of their original content, but we recognise them as coming from supermarket shelves. The artist has determined the order of jars on the table. Nevertheless, the viewing experience changes constantly since our impression of the colours depends on where in the room, how close or far away, and from what height, we observe the jars’ interaction. Sólveig Aðalsteinsdóttir has studied in Iceland, the USA and Holland and has had a number of solo exhibitions around the world.
