Troels Wörsel (1950–2018) was an autodidact. His theoretical points of departure included conceptual art, minimalism and pop art, which he combined in an unusual way. Experimentation and exploring the surface of the painting was central to his creative process. His aim was to explore how an image comes into being and how it relates to art history and tradition. This formal approach also applied to Wörsel’s works on paper. He often incorporated existing texts into his works, such as old wine labels, advertisements and newspaper clippings.
