Anne-Birthe Hove was born and grew up in Greenland and became one of the country’s most prominent artists. A central theme in her art was the complex relationship between man and nature. Her works also reflect a specific Greenlandic identity, characterized to a great extent by the conditions of the natural environment. In the 1960s and 1970s, Anne-Birthe Hove and her art was a voice for greater political sovereignty for Greenland. Hove, who had studied at the graphic art department of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, was famous especially for her prints. Alongside printmaking, however, she became profoundly interested in artistic experiments in a variety of materials, methods and styles. She diligently explored aesthetic challenges and the power of visual narratives.
