Hreinn Friðfinnsson (1943–2024) was one of Iceland’s leading conceptual artists. His art is understated, subtle and poetic in its expression. Friðfinnsson worked as much with ideas and thoughts in his works as with their appearance. Often he created so-called readymades using everyday objects in new contexts. He turned found objects into new works that explored notions of the self and time. Friðfinnsson worked with many different techniques, including photography, drawing, sculpture, installation and text. His art was often minimalistic. Hreinn Friðfinnsson grew up in the Icelandic countryside and nature’s grandeur was also an important engine firing his creative process. He lived in Amsterdam since the 1970s.
