Ian McKeever
- England, 1946

Ian McKeever’s art is full of light and movement. The abstract paintings are based on a philosophy which he develops in his writings. The light he creates in his works counteracts the darkness that he sees around him – the materialism and greed of our time as the opposite of true enlightenment. McKeever first studied English literature but began working as an artist in 1968, with both photography and painting. Initially his art was more landscape-based, but from the mid-1980s it became more abstract, reflecting a growing interest in the human body and architectural structures. For Ian McKeever, the working process is as important as the result, and he favors a serial approach in varying, often large formats. Oil, acrylic, gouache or watercolour is applied in layers upon layers, where the underlying layer of paint always shines through, and gives no opportunity to change what has already been done. The works are created during a concentrated, often very long working process. In each painting McKeever extends his own limits, while creating in contact with nature, isolated from other people.
