In the artistic work of Ulf Rollof opposites confront each another. Natural scenery meets culture, reflection follows intuition. Nothing is self-explanatory. The vulnerability of life is an important theme. One of the strengths in Rollof’s art is the way it transforms what is personally experienced into something universal. When pain strikes us, our astonished bodies struggle to defend themselves. Who is unfamiliar with this instinct? The series Calendar Drawings was created in 1998–99. At that time, the artist felt a particular need to turn in inward, to conduct conversations with himself. The images in the series take the form of an intimate diary, constantly oscillating between the dreamlike and reality. Strange human figures and frail trees are recurring themes, sketched with trembling lines on their way to a meeting of the colours.
