Wang Dongling
- China, 1945
Wang Dongling is among the most famous Chinese calligraphers in the world today. As a performance at the opening reception of the exhibition China's Changing Landscape 2014, Wang Dongling created a calligraphy work, that functions as the exhibition’s signage, using an oversize brush and bucket of ink. The artist suggested a phrase from the I Ching, (Book of Changes), a book from pre-history, dating back to the 3rd millennium B.C., as a poetic parallel to the title of the exhibition. The characters are translated as “ultimate knowledge is understanding the transformation of the universe” – underscoring the philosophical dimension of Chinese landscape painting. Wang Dongling was educated at the calligraphy department of the China National Academy of Art in Hangzou.
