The Friends of The Nordic Watercolour Museum, the municipality of Tjörn, and The Nordic Watercolour Museum present a brand-new documentary about the mysterious Gothenburg colourist, Åke Göransson, directed by Pontus Hjorthén, followed by a discussion.
Livet är kort konsten lång ("Life is short, art is long") begins in 1920s Gothenburg, where Åke Göransson's brief, lonely life leads to an exciting journey into the past. Trapped with his mother in a one-room apartment in Landala, cut off from the world and living in total poverty, Åke created paintings that are timeless and poignant. Much like Kafka with his manuscripts, Åke never intended to show them to anyone; for him, they were merely exercises. The true masterpieces would come later.
The artwork, along with the story of its miraculous discovery in his mother's kitchen sofa, guides the film through Åke's peculiar quest for the essence of colour and form while simultaneously recounting his ill-fated love story with Inga from Dalsland.
The narrative of artist Åke Göransson takes an unexpected turn when new works enter the art market, long after Åke's passing. The tale of Åke's younger brother, the forger, adds a new twist to Åke Göransson's story. Additionally, the documentary unveils the identity of the current owner of the world's largest collection of Göransson paintings.
"The saddest part about dying would be never seeing Åke Göransson's art again!"
– Lars Lerin
The film includes appearances by notable individuals such as Lars Lerin, who proudly exhibits his extensive collection of Åke Göransson's artworks, as well as Maria Taube, Eva Göransson, Ragnar Strömberg, Daniel Ekta Götesson, Johannes Nordholm, and Arne Stubelius.
