Contemporary Nordic Comics

Art, comics, life – what are the visual stories of contemporary Nordic comic artists about? In 2010, The Nordic Watercolour Museum celebrates its tenth anniversary and invites the public to an exhibition that both plays and challenges.
The Nordic comics scene is bubbling with life. In recent years, books, magazines, fanzines, blogs and exhibits have introduced lots of fascinating new talent. Not unlike a relentless flow of hot lava, new trails are blazed around and across the established framework of the art and publishing world.
The possibilities in the meeting between words and images seem endless, and today’s Nordic comics display great diversity in both expression and content. The stylish and elegantly drawn coexist with the childish and the deliberately raw, rough-around-the-edges depictions of life.
In the process of putting together this exhibit, we decided to present 19 contemporary Nordic artists who all have visually striking work and individual expressions, and invite them to work alongside us. Our rooms have been cleared to make way for a multitude of original sketches, murals and other presentations along with a smaller cartoon workshop and a well-stocked reading corner.
During the past few years, we here at The Nordic Watercolour Museum have focused our efforts on promoting pictorial storytelling for children and young adults. Contemporary Nordic Comics will be the third exhibit in this project, and the first to showcase comics as an art form at our museum.
