Eva Vilne paints pictures of girls and women. Their feelings and mental states are reflected in their physical posture and gestures. They are seen dancing or imprisoned within a circle of shadows. The large eyes of these slim creatures express fear, sorrow and joy. At times only a single person is depicted and on occasions a woman is seen holding a baby girl in her embrace. There are references to the work of Lena Cronqvist here, but the ultimate origins lie in ancient church decoration. Eva Vilne’s art deals constantly with questions relating to femininity and the vulnerable human body. It treats time as cyclical event, and presents insights into the ways in which life’s beautiful and cruel sides interact with one another. Her works develop slowly. In her palette brown and blue tones dominate.
