Artist Talk: Britta Marakatt-Labba

Over the past decade, Britta Marakatt-Labba, born 1951 in Idivuoma in Sápmi, has made an almost unparalleled breakthrough. After studies at Sunderby folkhögskola and the School of Design and Crafts at Gothenburg University, she returned to her native region in the late 1970s. Her international breakthrough came in 2017, when her 24-metre long embroidery Historjá (2003–2007) was shown at documenta 14 in Kassel, Germany.
Britta Marakatt-Labba's embroidered narratives connect the historical and the symbolic. Her motifs revolve around Sámi life in close relationship with nature, but also around colonialism, loss and resistance – about the face of racism, human greed and the lost lands once grazed by the animals.
The exhibition will present previously unseen works by the artist. It comprises around 70 works, mainly watercolours and drawings, complemented by a selection of embroideries and graphics.
On Saturday 26 September, during the opening of this unique exhibition at The Nordic Watercolour Museum, Britta Marakatt-Labba and museum director Bera Nordal will meet for an artist talk. What is significant about Marakatt-Labba’s artistic practice, and what stories do her visual worlds carry?
