“Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?” On representation in art, now and then

info
Why have there not been any great female artists?
The question is asked by Linda Nochlin, Professor of Art History, in the early 1970s. The response is an explosion of international art history research in an attempt to find the answer. It turns out that there have been many women artists throughout art’s history, who since the Middle Ages have been highly celebrated stars. They sold their works for more than their male counterparts, worked for the great royal courts of Europe, founded art academies and much more.
This lecture focuses on written art history, major women artists, and unthinkable life destinies. We seek to understand why the art history books have consistently ignored the works of women artists, and what reality actually looked like throughout art history.
Admission free, pre-registration is required. Coffee and tea will be served.
