On 26 September, the exhibition with Britta Marakatt-Labba will be inaugurated with a performance by the Sámi-Norwegian joiker, musician and composer Georg Buljo.
The connection between the musician and the artist is significant. Buljo's joik Girdilan ("I Take to the Air") was inspired by Marakatt-Labba’s art and can be heard in the documentary film Historjá – stygn för Sápmi, which was awarded two Guldbagge Awards in 2023. During the opening, Buljo's music will be in direct dialogue with Marakatt-Labba's work.
The voice is the starting point for Georg Buljo's music, but he also incorporates frame drums, percussion and electronics into a personal soundscape where ancient traditions meet modern, dreamlike sonic worlds. With an open and exploratory musical approach, Buljo moves freely between the Sámi musical traditions and a range of different genres. He has released several critically acclaimed solo albums, composed and performed numerous commissioned works with the joik at their centre, and collaborated with prominent Sámi artists including Mari Boine, Niko Valkeapää, Ára (Simon Marainen), Lars-Ánte Kuhmunen, Biret Risten Sara and Johan Anders Bær.
We are delighted to welcome Georg Buljo to the stage at The Nordic Watercolour Museum and look forward to the opening of the major exhibition with Britta Marakatt-Labba. The occasion will begin with an inauguration speech by Museum Director Bera Nordal.
