Flowers and other kinds of plants serve as the primary motif in Line Bergseth’s work. She studies their lives and documents her observations in photographs, sketches and botanical collections. Her paintings occasionally resemble scientific illustrations. References to Carl Linnaeus and his botanical studies are both unavoidable and made consciously. As with old-fashioned flora, each plant is depicted for its own sake. The flowers are not decorative, but are the primary subjects of these pieces. In the watercolours, they typically float freely on the surface of the white paper. Each picture is a tender portrait of a unique individual plant which has been shaped by the conditions of its location, climate and time.
