The large-scale textile artwork Historjá by Britta Marakatt-Labba made a huge breakthrough when it was shown at documenta 14 in Kassel. The embroidery, depicting motifs from Sámi history, is also the starting point of Thomas Jackson’s documentary, which tells us about Sámi culture, whose history has been marked by a struggle against the majority population. The struggle has concerned the right to land and way of life, but also underlying this are two views of mankind and its relationship to nature. In Historjá – Stitches for Sápmi, historical events and mythological images are woven together with how climate change threatens contemporary reindeer herding and thus the existence of Sámi culture.

We welcome artist Elin Teilus, joined by Mats Jenséus on guitar and Björn Bohlin on oboe, flute and didgeridoo. Together they create a moving encounter with Sámi history and culture, exploring themes of returning, belonging and the inviolability of life.

Elle Marja, 14, is a reindeer-breeding Sámi girl. Exposed to the racism of the 1930's and race biology examinations at her boarding school, she starts dreaming of another life. To achieve this other life she has to become someone else and break all ties with her family and culture.
The Listening / End of Daylight Saving Time
As the days grow shorter and nature prepares for cold and darkness, we come together around the simple shared activity of listening together. There will be readings, walks, fika, and creative activities in the forest and by the sea, on Orust one day, and on Tjörn the next.

Britta Marakatt-Labba
Britta Marakatt-Labba has gained international recognition for her extraordinary embroideries. Her drawings and watercolours, however, are almost entirely unknown – works she has kept out of the public eye until now. These delicate, sometimes spontaneous and always evocative images, created largely without any intention of being exhibited publicly, are thematically closely related to her embroideries. The exhibition at The Nordic Watercolour Museum focuses on Britta Marakatt-Labba’s works on paper, which are being shown publicly for the first time. This opens up an entirely new perspective on her artistic practice.
