Elle Marja attends a Sámi boarding school together with her younger sister and is expected to take over the family's reindeer-herding tradition. At the same time, she dreams of a different life, far from the villagers’ harsh words and prejudice, and from the school's strict discipline and compulsory traditional dress. Everything falls apart after the racial biology examinations conducted at the school, and Elle Marja decides to leave everything behind and become Swedish. She steals the clothes and identity of her Swedish teacher and escapes to Uppsala, only to discover that changing her life is far more difficult than she imagined.
