Experience Christmas at The Nordic Watercolour Museum

As part of The Nordic Watercolour Museum's jubilee celebrations in 2025, two of the museum’s earlier publications are being reissued: Byggt på vilja och vatten ("Built on Will and Water", 2000) and Framgångar vid vatten ("Successes by the Water", 2013). The publication was released in connection with the museum’s inauguration, on the day in June when the vision became tangible: a museum and centre for water-based art, seemingly floating upon the surface of the North Sea.Many of the museum’s supporters at different levels share their voices in the book. Alfons Åberg – Transmedialitet och generationsmöten i tid, lek och fantasi (2025)

If we take that conventional way of looking at children, it’s like: “oh, now they’re really going to get it – there will be adventure and strange planets and scary robots and dangers, and then it will all turn out well in the end.” A conventional creator takes it for granted that things should end well... but I don’t have happy endings in my stories, I don’t want that – because I can’t promise that everything will be fine. It’s just a small pause until the next catastrophe happens… and then I think that adults who produce a lot of action – well, I’m sure there’s a need for that too, I don’t deny it – but there can also be a lot of drama in something as small as not having a friend… being alone, walking alone down the street, and there’s no one who agrees with me… Or having hit someone – he did hit a younger kid on the football field – and feeling guilty about it… that’s a big drama in a child’s world. – Gunilla Bergström, quote from an interview with Kristian Berglund, The Nordic Watercolour Museum<hr>Since 2016, The Nordic Watercolour Museum in Skärhamn has served as the center of the network SAKS (Studies in Artistic Vision). Om vi tar det där konventionella sättet att se på barn, så är det ”oh nu ska dom minsann få här – här ska bli äventyr och främmande planeter och otäcka robotar och farligheter och så ska det bli bra på slutet” – det tar ju en konventionell skapare som givet att det ska vara bra på slutet… men jag har inga bra slut i mina berättelser, jag vill inte det – för jag kan inte lova att allt blir bra. It will be an autumn holiday that’s equal parts cozy and mysterious at The Nordic Watercolour Museum. We’ve put together a programme with activities for all ages – whether you’re feeling creative, want to watch movies in the dark, or only have a little time left in the evening. The museum and all <a href="https://www.akvarellmuseet.org/en/exhibitions" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">exhibitions</a> are open Tuesday–Sunday from 11 am to 4 pm. Are you under 26 years old? Then admission is free! Don’t miss the chance to borrow one of our Discovery Bags, filled with fun tools that help you see art from new perspectives. Magnifying glasses, hourglasses, and other tools might come in handy when you tackle the challenges on the Discovery Cards found in each bag.If you'd like to create on your own (or if the studio is full), head upstairs in the museum. There, we've have set up a workshop to celebrate our jubilee year,&nbsp; where you can explore the magic of watercolour pencils. You'll also find books on technique to browse, perfect for sparking inspiration to help you get started. What makes this workshop extra special is that it's open during the museum's regular opening hours, meaning there's always space to let your creativity flow.&nbsp;

Autumn Holiday at the Museum

The Nordic Watercolour Museum's book about Alfie Atkins and the donation from Gunilla Bergström to the museum's collection have been awarded by Svensk Bokkonst!Svensk Bokkonst ("Swedish Book Art") was founded in 1933 with the aim of stimulating and inspiring the book industry to achieve higher quality in the production of printed books. To fulfil this ambition, 25 exemplary books are selected each year as models of excellence. It has now been announced that Gunilla Bergström &amp; Alfons Åberg, published by The Nordic Watercolour Museum, is one of this year’s award winners!Jury’s motivation:<blockquote>A fascinating treasure chest filled with previously unpublished sketches and illustrations, yet instantly familiar. Printing technique and choice of paper are in perfect harmony, with the working process revealed in an innovative way that invites the reader to turn and twist the book in order to get closer to the originals.</blockquote><h3>About the book</h3>Before her passing in 2021, Gunilla Bergström donated the original artworks behind the beloved books about Alfie Atkins to The Nordic Watercolour Museum. In honour of this invaluable donation, the museum published in 2024 an entirely new book showcasing Bergström’s collected works, including previously unpublished sketches and original illustrations. Nordiska Akvarellmuseets bok om Alfons Åberg och donationen från Gunilla Bergström till museets samling prisas av Svensk Bokkonst!Svensk Bokkonst grundades år 1933 med syftet att stimulera och inspirera bokbranschen till ökad kvalitet inom produktionen av tryckta böcker. För att fullfölja denna ambition utser man årligen 25 föredömligt producerade böcker och pekar därmed på goda förebilder. Nu står det klart att boken Gunilla Bergström &amp; Alfons Åberg från Nordiska Akvarellmuseet är en av årets pristagare!Motivering:<blockquote>En spännande skattkista full av tidigare outgivna skisser och illustrationer, men ändå så bekant. What is the role of an art museum beyond its own walls? Is it just a place for devoted art lovers? A place where historical objects gather dust? Or can a museum actually make a difference?At a time when discussions about fake news flourish, public trust in museums is at an all-time high. In fact, according to the annual Swedish SOM Institute survey of public opinion, museums rank ahead of the police, healthcare, and politics in terms of public trust. Does this trust bring a particular responsibility for museums to take on?As part of our 25th jubilee, we invite you to a digital lecture series exploring the role of the museum. Across five lectures, each approaching the topic from a completely different perspective, art meets neuroscience, education, and AI, among other fields. We are curious about how The Nordic Watercolour Museum truly matters beyond its own sphere, as well as the broader impact of culture on people and society.One of The Nordic Watercolour Museum’s ambitions is to be a resource far beyond its own walls. Eller kan museet faktiskt göra skillnad?I en tid då det talas om fake news är allmänhetens förtroende för museer på topp. Faktum är att museer placerar sig före polis, sjukvård och riksdag när det gäller människors förtroende, enligt SOM-institutets årliga undersökning av svensk opinion. The Nordic Watercolour Museum presents: The Museum and...

In case you missed it: The Nordic Watercolour Museum is celebrating its 25th anniversary – a milestone that invites us to look back as well as ahead. Throughout the spring, we’ve been redesigning the upstairs spaces at the museum. Our aim has been to highlight our history, our work today with art education and artistic development, and our continued exploration of the future possibilities of water-based art – yesterday, today, and tomorrow.<h2>THORDÉNrummet</h2>The room known as “Thordénrummet” has taken on a new form for the summer. The space now houses archival material from the museum’s foundation and early years, including slides, film clips and documentation. Here, you’ll find the story of a house by the sea and of the work that has gone into shaping a meeting place for art, people and nature. Take a seat for a quiet moment, or pick up a magnifying glass to take a closer look at the slides displayed in the wall drawers. This is our history.

<h2>UPSTAIRS LANDING</h2>Many visitors are curious about our <a href="https://www.akvarellmuseet.org/en/visit/gueststudios">guest studios</a>. To mark our anniversary year, we invited artist Anna Erlandsson to recreate one of the studios in miniature. The result is a detailed and accurate model that shows the architecture and interior of the space. This represents the museum today. Just as 25 years ago, the museum remains a place that actively supports artistic development. Since our opening in 2000, hundreds of artists from all around the world have taken part in residencies in the very environment now portrayed in miniature. Being a resource for artists is a core part of the museum’s identity. By making this visible, we wish to highlight the role this place has played (and continues to play) in contemporary artistic practice.

<h2>KONSTPAUSEN</h2>In the room we call “Konstpausen”, a new workshop has taken shape. It is a room for experimentation and investigation, for anyone who wants to try and delve into watercolor pencils – a versatile medium that deserves more attention for its possibilities. The workshop is intended as a place where material feeling, curiosity and creation can meet. On the upper floor, this area will represent the future. Here you can lay the foundation for your watercolor painting and then take your picture home and add water to set the pigments in motion. Here, the picture of the future can take its first shape.

We hope that these changes will offer both new discoveries and a deeper understanding of the museum’s mission. As we celebrate our 25th anniversary, we wish to share what has been, what is, and what is yet to come. Welcome upstairs to take part in our anniversary year.

Förhoppningsvis har det inte undgått någon Nordiska Akvarellmuseet firar 25 år, ett jubileum som ger oss anledning att både blicka bakåt och se framåt. Under våren har vi gjort om på ovanvåningen i museet. Ambitionen har varit att synliggöra vår historia, vårt nutida arbete med konstpedagogik och konstnärlig utveckling, samt till vårt ständiga utforskande av framtidens möjligheter för konst baserad på vatten, pigment och papper.<h2>THORDÉNRUMMET</h2>Det så kallade “Thordénrummet” har ändrat form inför sommaren. Rummet rymmer nu historiskt material från museets tillblivelse och första år, i form av diabilder, filmklipp och dokumentation. Här finns berättelsen om ett hus vid havet och om det arbete som pågått i det tysta för att forma en plats för möten mellan konst, människor och natur. Slå dig ner i soffan för en stund i stillhet eller plocka upp ett förstoringsglas för att titta nära på de diabilder som visas i lådorna i väggen. Här är vår historia.
